how much does trademark registration cost in india?

The cost of registering a trademark in India is made up of two components: the government fee paid to the Trade Marks Registry, and the professional fee for the work of preparing and managing your application.

Government fees

The official filing fee for an application (Form TM-A) depends on who is applying and how it is filed. Indicatively, for e-filing:

  • Individuals, startups, and small enterprises: a reduced fee (around ₹4,500 per class).
  • Other applicants (companies, etc.): a higher fee (around ₹9,000 per class).

These are per class, per mark. A business filing in three classes pays the fee three times. Physical filing costs more than e-filing.

Government fees are set by the Registry and can change over time. Always confirm the current figures — we share up-to-date rates during your consultation, and you can also check the official IP India portal.

Professional fees

Professional fees cover the search, advice on class and distinctiveness, drafting the specification, filing, and handling any objections or oppositions later. These vary with the complexity of the matter — a clean single-class filing is far simpler than defending an opposition.

Why startups should ask about concessions

Recognised startups and MSMEs qualify for the reduced government fee, which can roughly halve the official cost. Keeping your recognition certificate ready at filing ensures you claim it.
